The Vanrooyen name originates from Managing Director Martin Rylands' Great Grandfather, George Vanrooyen. George was a South African international Rugby League & Rugby Union player.
At the age of 29, George moved to England in 1922 to play Rugby League for Hull Kingston Rovers, where he won the 1922-23 League Championship. He joined Wigan in November 1923, and went on to win the Challenge Cup in 1924, and two Lancashire League titles in 1923-24 and 1925-26. George played Left-second-row in Wigan's 11-15 defeat by Swinton in the 1925.
The Dutch surname Vanrooyen or Vanroon would appear to be of local or toponymic origin, being derived from the place of residence of the initial bearer. Toponymic surnames are those surnames which derive their origin either from a geographic feature or from the name of a place. In this instance, it would appear that the surname Vanrooyen is derived from the Dutch word "rooien" which indicates a place that has been cleared of trees or scrub and prepared for planting.
It is possible that in some instances the surname may be a patronym of the Germanic personal name Rojahn. The name Rojahn is itself derived from the name Rodrain which simply signifies "Red John". Natable bearers of the surname Vanrooyen would include Albrecht Theodor Emil, Graf van Roon (8103-1879) who served the emperor Willian I.
